COMPUTATIONAL CHEMIST - BERKSHIRE - NUCLEAR/SCIENTIFIC/PETRO-CHEM/ENGINEERING
My Client, a Nuclear establishment is seeking a Computational Scientist on a permanent basis.

Salary: 26-35k depending on experience

Key accountabilities
• To provide technical support to the Team Leader (TL) for the planning, development and underwriting of simulation methodologies applicable to materials modelling
• To provide insight into, and to develop and formulate mathematical descriptions and appropriate computer models for the modelling of material properties
• The successful and timely completion of tasks identified and agreed in the Personal Performance Plan
• The maintenance and enhancement of skills, knowledge, and capabilities necessary to support both current and future work programmes
• The preparation of technical reports on the work and the provision of regular progress reports
• Represent Materials Science Research and Development Department (MSRD) at external meetings with our collaborators, customers and sponsors

Responsibilities
• To develop an expertise in the application of advanced computational techniques to the materials modelling of warhead materials
• To utilize and compile software on a variety of high performance computing platforms
• To contribute to research activities of warhead materials and assist in the understanding and provide insight in the synthesis of new materials
• To keep abreast of latest developments in the field of computer modelling
• To assist in the planning and progressing of the agreed work programme
• To prepare internal reports and publish results of research and development in the open literature
• To conduct literature surveys, to seek advice, and form technical alliances and collaborations to progress the research effort
• To review and critique internal and external reports and documentation
• To critically examine the methodologies being developed by various agencies in the US and the UK to investigate their application to UK operational purposes
• To analyse the issues, to develop and formulate mathematical descriptions of, and to generate software that will predict material properties for specified warhead materials
• To act as a role model for the Company values and demonstrate the behaviours that support them
• To represent at national and international conferences
• To train and mentor graduate placement students
• To be aware of and to comply with the Companys Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Quality Standards requirements
• To safeguard national secrets and assets from unauthorised access or disclosure, report security breaches and apply security at all times

Qualifications
• Good honours degree and PhD in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science
• Preferably a member of the appropriate professional society
• Excellent understanding of the strengths and limitations of different molecular modelling methodologies and the information that can be obtained from each
• Good knowledge of the theory of atomistic simulation and molecular modelling
• Good knowledge of general Chemistry and Materials Science
• An understanding of Surface Chemistry and materials properties and their relationship to molecular modeling
• Some knowledge of Actinide Chemistry and the problems particularly associated with molecular modelling of Actinide materials
• A broad general knowledge of nuclear weapon systems
• Preferably post-doctoral research experience in an establishment separate from that in which the PhD was completed
• Experience in scientific or engineering research
• Experience in the undertaking of computational chemistry simulations, including the use of analytic tools and mathematical models
• Problem solving
• Technical decision making
• Ability to program in FORTRAN90 and / or C and compile computer programs on a variety of computer platforms
