Contract Recruitment

Contracting can be very beneficial and financially rewarding but before you follow this route its essential that you begin to act as business and not just a worker who is operating through a business.  You will need to have all the systems and processes in place to enable you to operate successfully as a business, this is everything from letterheads to legal resources. 

From the outset you need to decide which business is most appropriate to you and there are various options available to you including

  • Limited company
  • Partnership
  • Umbrella company
  • Sole Trader

What is most important is that you seek professional guidance on what is best suited to you and the implications of working as a contractor.

We have put together a short list of what we feel in our view is the advantages and disadvantages of contracting:

Advantages

  • There are a number of advantages to working in this way:
  • Pay: Contractors can expect to receive higher rates of pay than full time permanent members of staff.
  • Flexibility: As a contractor, the decision on working hours/holiday is usually down to the individual worker.
  • Experience: Working with different companies or on different projects will increase your experience within your chosen industry thus increasing your  desirability to potential employers

Disadvantages

  • Change: Not every individual is comfortable working within different environments with different people
  • Guaranteed work?: There may be occasions between assignments where work is difficult to come by.
  • Company Benefits: As a contractor you are not entitled to the same benefits as permanent members of staff such as contributory pensions, training etc.
